Running Shoes and Clothing Print E-mail

Running shoes are the most important part of your kit and accordingly you should take a bit of time when choosing a pair. Get to know your feet and the type of gait you have. Every person has a different biomechanical movement leading to variations in the way the foot hits the ground. These are broadly divided into three categories: over-pronation, under-pronation and neutral. There are various ways of determining which category you fall into; from digital foot scan analysis to the ‘wet test’. (Follow this link to see a simple way of determining your foot type: http://www.runnersworld.ltd.uk/foottype.htm).

Examining your old shoes should also give an indication of which type you are. Amphibian King in Bray offers professional help using digital technology to help determine your foot type. This service is free and would give you confidence that you are buying the correct shoes. Arnotts and Sportsworld in Terenure also offer a good runner fitting service.

Here are some examples of different type of shoes on the market but there are plenty more models starting from about 70 euro up.

Cushioned Shoe
Asics Gel Nimbus; Mizuno Wave Rider; Adidas Supernova; New Balance 755; Nike Air Pegasus
Stability Shoe Asics GT 2120, Asics Gel Kayano, Brooks Adrenalin GTS, Nike Air Structure Triax, New Balance 767
Motion Control
Asics Gel Foundation, Adidas Adistar Control, Brooks Beast, Mizuno Wave Renegade, Nike Air Cesium

In relation to clothing the main thing is to be comfortable. Shorts, leggings and tops should not be too restrictive and allow full range of motion. There are many fabrics out there with ‘dry flow’ properties which wick moisture away from the body keeping you more comfortable. These types of garments should be worn next to the skin but in inclement weather it is advisable to have shower proof gear. Gloves and hats are also beneficial for cold weather.

Ladies may also want to consider support bras, specifically designed for running activities. The aforementioned shops have a wide range of specific running apparel but there are also online retailers for more specific items (see appendices for website listings).  Socks are important, especially if completing big mileage. If you’re spending 130 euro on a pair of runners then it is advisable to purchase a specifically designed pair of running socks. These will reduce the risk of blisters and athletes foot. Thorlos, Sportswool and X-Socks are good running socks and retail from 10 euro. (Buy yourself a digital watch as it will give good indications as to how you’re progressing).
